The company
Gambia River Excursions Ltd. was founded in 1982 by Peter Losen and Monika Killi-Cole and is hereby one of the oldest ground operators in the Gambia. It is also one of the only major companies in the Gambian tourist industry who is promoting sustainable tourism, an attitude which has been awarded in the year 2000 with the ASSET Eco-tourism Enterprise Award.
Gambia River Excursions started as a ground operator specialised in boat excursions on the river Gambia, but today it is involved in a vast range of activities. Perhaps the most known branch of Gambia River Excursions is Lamin Lodge, the bar/restaurant on stilts in the midst of the mangroves of the river Gambia.
Another flagbearer of GRE is Janjang Bureh Camp, a riverside camp 350 km from the Gambian capital in one of the most unspoiled areas of the country.
Each of these operating bases harbours a fleet of boats, ranging from small dug out canoes to 4 40-passenger sailing boats with kitchen, toilet and sleeping facilities. All big ships can be rented for excursions from the hotel area or can be integrated in a 1 or 2-week round trip for independent travellers.
For independent travellers we offer a choice of round trips in both Gambia, Senegal and Guinea. Besides our scheduled programs, we also offer tailor made round trips for groups of more then 6 people. All round trips are organised by our subsidiary Africa for Beginners.
